We've considered adding a wooden mantel to our fireplace to give it a little more pop and give us a place to hang stockings for our growing family. What do you think of this look?
Other homes may have a more traditional design that focuses on the use of a classic wood toned or white mantle and porcelain and polished natural stone surrounding the actual fireplace unit. This look will always give you the opportunity to add some color to your room and is an affordable option because your material costs are generally less due to the limited use of stone and/or wood in the design.
More contemporary designs focus on high-tech fireplace units and seem to be doing away with the mantle all together and opting for a sleek consistent material that has dramatic vertical or horizontal linear elements for visual appeal.

ReplyDeleteMy own knowledge of the complexities behind achieving certain colors, which I learned watching my grandfather “yard dye” and underfire his own handmade brick to render them a very soft, nearly apricot color, makes me get a little weird when brick is subjected to a coat of paint. A similar pall takes hold when debates about slaking, efflorescence, dust, crumbling, cracks, dust or deterioration of any kind, which is always caused by water or neglect, arise.
